Founded in 1986, the U of A Kung Fu Club teaches the Wing Chun style of Chinese kung fu, a scientific fighting style originating from the famous Shaolin temple. It emphasizes skill, technique and evasion rather than brute force, making it a martial art for everyone regardless of size, strength or musculature. Wing Chun is characterized by close-range fighting, lightning-fast hand techniques and effective low kicks. Wing Chun is self-defense and as such, it is practical, fast and destructive. In addition to self-defense, Wing Chun training also improves mental discipline, self-confidence, fitness and health. Therefore, people of all ages and abilities can participate and enjoy the training every day.

What is Wing Chun?

  • Wing Chun is a traditional martial art that combines the power of the hard force as in karate with the pliancy of the gentle force as in Tai Chi, employing them interchangeably.
  • It uses "close-in" fighting strategy.
  • It focuses on lightning-fast hand techniques and paralyzing low kicks.

Why take Wing Chun?

  • Wing Chun does not teach a set pattern of combat. It trains one to respond freely. Thus, it is very practical for self-defense.

"If any style teaches you a method of fighting, then you might be able to fight according to the limit of that method, but that is not actually fighting." -- Bruce Lee

How does Wing Chun enable a small and weak person to defend themselves against a big and strong opponent?

  • Wing Chun stresses redirecting and evading an opponent's brute force and so neutralizing the attack.

"One does not run head on with a mad bull; one lets it run by." --Master Ng

Does Wing Chun have complicated and "flowery" movements?

  • No, Wing Chun techniques are simple and energy efficient. Its goal is to disable the attacker quickly with direct and deadly techniques.

"Simplicity is the shortest distance between two points." --Bruce Lee

What can one achieve physically and mentally from Wing Chun Training?

  • Whatever your goal is in training, you will achieve what you have put in.

"Ultimately, your only enemy is yourself." -- Master Ng
